Well, to be honest, I haven’t even watched the anime yet, only seen meme snippets of it. And it’s pretty rare to like a media adaptation more than the original literature. I liked it, I wouldn’t be obsessed with it, but I love the characters’ depictions in the anime more than the manga. I know there’s a spin off series and a alternative version to satisfy me but still. If there was one more volume of the original series I think I would’ve been happier. Also I have to remember that this manga is from a whole different generation where Sci-Fi novels info-dumping was considered cool and okay. It’s not easy to do though, because if I wrote this story, I’m sure I would do the same thing. I think this only happened because the manga was short and I understand the reader’s need to know what the heck is happening but at the same time I wish the info was spread out a bit more. The story plot is ingenious and original, especially for its time, but I wish there was more action in certain chapters and not just Ryo explaining the lore and myth. I love the artwork and find it adorable (weird to say for this kind of story) but I also find it fucking hilarious thanks to the memes. The smart thing to do was to mute “Devilman” and “Crybaby” on Twitter and stop following fandom accounts. I enjoyed way too many memes and I was already spoiled on what the ending was, even though tragic manga usually have endings like this. This is not really a criticism, it’s more my own fault.

But also, the social media hype had spoiled me a lot. I zoomed through the first two volumes, I really liked the super villain laughs and Akira’s extremely expressive bushey eyebrows.

It’s a short read which is a plus for me because reading long manga series is super tiring for me. My overall opinion is this: I appreciate it’s legacy, the writing is freaking awesome and mind blowing. This is a fairly popular manga so I’m not going to bother explaining the plot. So I finally got into the series around the same time the Netflix anime remake came out and my social media got flooded with pretty Ryo and Akira fan art. Then over the summer my brother recommended it to me and I still didn’t bother to read it because I just can’t get into reading manga like I did as a teen. I’ve known about Devilman years ago but it fell behind in my reading lists.
